Drove up highway 61
from Gooseberry Falls to Split Rock Light House. Split Rock Light House is a
Minnesota Historical Site. The light house was built after 29 ships were damaged
or lost during a November gale in 1905. The light house was completed in 1910
and decommissioned in 1969. Three light house keepers lived on the grounds. The
light house was accessible only by boat until 1924 after which the north shore
highway was completed. We camped on the shore of a lake in the Boundary Waters
of northern Minnesota.
