Great places we stayed

What is Miles2ogo?

It happened to us, crazy but true.

Left Sidney early and took highway 200 all the way to Lewistown, Montana before settling in for the night in Fort Benton MT. Fort Benton is the oldest city in Montana. We spent the night at the Grand Union Hotel, the oldest operating hotel in Montana.

Between Sidney and Fort Benton we made a few stops at some interesting places along the way.

Some mule deer along the road were nice enough to let us take there pictures considering that deer hunting season in Montana has been going on for at least 3 weeks.

Came across the little town of Coffee Creek, Montana and could not resist taking a few pictures of the "town".

Square Butte:
July 15, 1805
The heavily loaded canoes sit low in the water, despite what’s been left in the caches. They pass the Smith River (a name that sticks), for Jefferson ’s Secretary of the Navy, Robert Smith. Drouillard wounds a deer that runs into the Missouri . Seaman follows, drowns the deer, and retrieves it. They pass today’s Square Butte, which they name Fort Mountain .

The town of Square Butte has an old jail that is on the National Register of Historic Places. So we stopped to take a look.

The Grand Union hotel in Fort Benton has one of only three, 3- star, restaurants in Montana. The others are Bozeman and Kalispell. We dined on spinach salad with a champagne vinaigrette, rock shrimp linguine (Terry) and short rib in a pinot noir sauce (Heather). For dessert we shared warm chocolate cake (which took 12 minutes to prepare)...chocolate cake with warm melted molten chocolate oozing from inside with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The first picture is the view from our room of the Missouri River. The others are of the hotel, dining room and lobby. This was a very friendly town; we had a great time talking to some of the locals.
