Drove around Garrison Dam on the way back to Hazen. Garrison Dam dams up the Missouri River to create Lake Sakakawea. Lake Sakakawea is named after the Shoshone Indian woman that helped Lewis and Clark. Sakakawea and her husband, Charbonneau,  served as interrupters for Lewis and Clark. The lake level of Lake Sakakawea is at record lows due to the drought that has gripped the entire western United States.

I walked in front of the large spillway gates. The scale of numbers on the side of the gates indicate the lake level above sea level. The first two numbers (18) are not painted on the scale. The maximum lake level is 1854 feet above sea level so you can see that the lake level is very low. The current lake level is about 1814 feet above sea level.
