We took a car ferry across Galveston Bay to get back to Texas...Penny's first boat trip.
While tooling around we sighted a tug and some barges heading up the intercoastal waterway. We found a place to pull off the road and watch it go by. As it got closer to us we could read the writing on the barges. Apparently they were transporting Benzene, which is apparently highly toxic. There were all kinds of warnings about not breathing it. Hmm...oh well...we were upwind from it at least.
Continuing to drive east we found ourselves in coastal Louisiana which was hit hard by hurricane Rita. These pictures are in what used to be a town called Holly Beach. It's one thing to see the it all on TV (or hear about it on satellite radio)....quite another to see it in person and realize how complete the devastation was. We'd thought about driving to New Orleans but after seeing this, didn't have the heart.
