Sauntering, Our travels around the country Maple Syrup Symposium (2007) Terry's cross country bicycle trip It happened to us, crazy but true. So how did I end up in Texas updated videos) |
April 24, 2006 We camped in Illinois, at Beaver Dam State Park. While we were having breakfast some people were walking their herd/family of dogs. There were four Newfoundlands and a welsh terrier and a maltese. One of the Newfies always had to have something to carry so they'd given him a towel that morning for the walk. Another one was 11 years old and they said he didn't believe he had to listen to commands anymore. They said the small dogs have learned to move fast to get out of the way. We couldn't help but pet the dogs and talk to the owners. We were on our way to Springfield Illinois to see Lincoln's Tomb and the Lincoln Museum when we came across a covered bridge. Then on to Springfield and Lincoln's Tomb. One of the volunteers at his tomb said that as she stood there some days she imagined what Lincoln's response to his burial place would be. She believed as humble as he was he would have been embarrassed by the grandeur. But it is a beautiful monument to a leader who guided us through difficult times. She also said that many people comment on what it would be like if we had a man like him as president right now. But, she said, that couldn't happen today. Lincoln was self taught (no or very little formal education) and he came from too humble beginnings. The Abraham Lincoln Museum and Presidential Library are also in Springfield. The museum is one of the best museums we've toured. You really get a feel for the times and the man. Lincoln's main concern was not slavery but the preservation of the Union.
